Pass the Bon Bons!

Ada is at preschool, June is napping and I am having a rare chance to watch my program. When Ada was a baby she would take marathon naps every afternoon, those were the good old days. I don't really feel comfortable watching adult programming with the girls so I keep my TV viewing to a minimum until after they go to sleep. Then I try not to be a big jerkface and pick thing that Ken will also enjoy watching (Ken does not enjoy any shows about a Kardashian or celebrities dealing with addiction or wives of basketball players, la-ti-da) so it has been easily more than a year since I was last in Port Charles with my General Hospital friends. The great thing about my stories is you can skip a year and pretty much be caught up with what is going on. In just a few short years Ada and June will both be in school and it will be all daytime television all the time. Maybe instead of being a Mommy Blog this can be a Soap Opera Blog? I'll be the new Cindy Rienhart!

Readers (that is you, Sue and Dad) do you have any guilty TV pleasures??

I Got Nothing

I feel like I should blog everyday. Or 3 times a week. Or bi weekly. Or quartlerly.
In any case, I got nothing!
So, I will just post a picture of my most cute daughters. Well, that was my intention, but I looked and looked and could not find them anywhere. Seriously, am I the worst mother??

All the Pretty Little Piggies

Ada colored a very special picture for me yesterday. Actually she said it was for her teacher, but I believe we will be keeping it in the private collection.

She has just recently started drawing and coloring recognizable things. She was in a lengthy phase I called her Nebula Period. Of course, I am always proud of Ada but I will admit to being a little jealous of pictures I saw on Facebook. Kids her same age were and are pumping out recognizable princesses wearing dresses and crowns, smiley faces labeled Mama and very accurate renderings of Cookie Monster. I don't begrudge those children their talent, but I was looking for a little of that over here. I wasn't a jerk about it or anything, I never suggested that her drawings were anything but beautiful, and they really were. Plus, that she called her drawings space nebula helped take the sting out of the nonstop scribbling. Some people are science geniuses and not so good at the art. It takes all types and I know that, as I parent I just non-judmentally wait to see what will unfold.  Then one day a few months ago, she turned a corner and started drawing actual things. She drew the Wicked Witch, Dorothy, and gang together and I was bursting with the pride. You parents know what I am talking about.

And now this precious piece. The girls were doing a little coloring over at Grammy's, I came upon Ada just putting the finishing touches on it. Let's see, that is a mother pig, she has 10 babies (not in the drawing, but important for context). Mother pig is dead. The red is blood coming out of  her neck. A little further down the mother pig's body is the mother pig's nurse, it is purple. Milk is leaking out of her corpse. A coyote killed her, so that is pretty rough. I may have had a look of shock so Ada explained that Jesus came and killed the bad guys. I reminded her that isn't how Jesus rolls.

So, yes, this will stay in the private collection.

Little Forests

You know that part in Forest Gump where Forest first meets his son and asks if he is smart, and then you can see the relief when Jenny assures him that his is? That is how I feel when I go out and about with Ada and June and they interact with other adults.

Don't talk to her, she'll CRY!
I was a totally shy kid, like, I didn't talk to any of my teachers ever. My Mom was spoken to several times about the issue, there was a concern that I was learning anything because I didn't talk, ever. I think I even did a pull out counseling group about it when I was in 4th grade. I can remember turning red when I was called on to answer a question (and to be honest, I am better now, but it makes me sweat just thinking about that-yikes!). I couldn't even look at Santa in the mall at Christmas time and I was afraid of my own Gramps for the first several years of knowing him, and he was not even a little bit scary. Although he did have very deep voice, but it is the kind of thing that you could get used to in 2 or 3 hours as compared to 2 to 3 years.

My daughters are not that same way at all. They will talk to anyone about anything. Yesterday we went to the beauty salon for haircuts, and both girls were chatty the whole time. Today, Ada went to the Post Office with me and picked out 3 books of stamps, talking with the mailman the whole time. It really blows me away! Yay for bold girls!

Before I had kids I assumed they would just be little mini-versions of me but it hasn't turned out that way at all. I think it is better this way.

Happy Wednesday!

Word Up!

Here I am. Really, really, really, really making a stab at being a blogger. So, here it goes. And with that...

Sisters who watch programs together don't fight together.
Have you guys seen the show Word Girl? It is on PBS, that is channel 9 here, but you can watch it on the internet too because living in the future is amazing. After 3 years* of children's programming, I may have lost all perspective in this area, but it is a really good show. This is where you might call my credibility into question, I think it might be enjoyable even if you aren't watching it with kids. Also, I don't mind watching Dora, just saying in the spirit of full disclosure. Anyways, the cast is pretty amazing and like all of the best shows, the laughs are for the adults and the kids. One of the main villains, Mr. Big, is voiced by none other than Hank Kinsley or Jeffrey Tambor. Genius. So, totally check it out.

Us with our hound of love, Mickey
Another thing I've been really into is listening to Hounds of Love by Kate Bush, mostly the song Running Up That Hill, I love watching the music video too. We first listened to the album when Ken borrowed it from the library 7 or so years ago. We had a hound dog, so it seemed obvious that we would listen to something called Hounds of Love. Anyways, Running Up That Hill is a really good song. Guess what? Even more suspect than my taste in television shows, is my taste in music. See my devotion to Sarah McLaughlin from 1994 to 2004 for evidence. What? She is awesome! So, take away what you will from my endorsement.

*Yes, Ada is almost 5 but she didn't watch TV regularly for the first 1.5 years. I have standards, but obviously the same is not true for little June. All TV all the time. Her first words were "Where is the remote?"

Happy New Year!

Here I am! Checking in for my semi-annual blog!
It is a new year. I am resolving to write more, where is a better place than my ill-used, or naught used, blog? Oh, I have other resolutions. Losing 20 pounds, being a Mickey Mouse and not Donald Duck when I am in tricky situations, spending more real real time with my daughters. Oh yeah, 2013 is going to be quite a year.
I have been thinking about 2012. It was kind of blah, my Gramps died early in the year. Blah! A few of our friends were really sick, blah. On the other hand, my sister got married and my niece was born. But then my sister and her husband moved to Hong Kong. That is cool for them, but what about me? The whole thing was just kind of a wash. I'm looking for big things in the old turn around the sun, it's up to you 2013. No pressure.
